This paper attempts to situate the phenomenon of Islamism in its historical context, and present it as representative of a general, pervasive “civilizational paradigm”, to invoke Huntington, which haunts the imaginary of the liberal West as much as Muslim societies. In tracing the adoption by Islamist tendencies of a civilizational outlook, and in showing how the civilizational problematic is at the heart of a certain expansionist bourgeois ideology, the aim is to propose a Marxist approach towards the critique of Islamism.
